Dr Filiberto

When the United States boxing team in the Beijing Olympics step into the Workers' Indoor Arena for their respective fights, one man is closely watching every member of the team. The man is not a boxer, not even a member of the training staff, but his role in the team is so important that he must be present in every bout.

That man is Dr. Frank P. Filiberto, team doctor of the US boxing team in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He was handpicked for the position because of his experience in overseeing boxing fights, having served as president of the American College of Ringside Physicians and chief physician for the Florida Amateur Boxing Association.

Education

Dr. Frank P. Filiberto began his journey into the world of medicine and plastic surgery at St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y. where he obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He earned his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and became a Doctor of Medicine at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1976.

He gained experience in General Surgery through internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Florida. Afterward, he furthers his specialization on the face, ear, and nose treatment by finishing Otolaryngology at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Professional Qualifications

Dr. Frank P. Filiberto specializes in Otolaryngology with focus in facial plastic surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology as a head-and-neck, facial plastic surgeon in recognition of his expertise in this field.

His expertise in facial plastic surgery leads to his involvement in boxing, serving as physician for amateur boxing fights in the state of Florida as well as serving as an officer in different organizations of ringside physicians. His role as a boxing physician culminated in his selection as doctor for the US Boxing team in the Beijing Olympics.

Medical Practice

He is currently based in Melbourne, Florida where he is running a cosmetic surgery center called Artful Awakenings. The clinic, which he founded in 1985, offers plastic surgery operations such as Nose Reconstruction (Rhinoplasty), Neck Firming, Face Lifts, Upper and Lower Eyelid Lifts, Laser Therapy and Skin Creams and Lotions, Skin Resurfacing including Chemical Peels, plus Breast Implants and Reduction.

He rose to national awareness in 2011 when a woman whom he inserted with breast implants survived a stabbing attack. The knife repeatedly punctured the implants in her left breast, which served as a protective cushion to her lungs and heart. She was successfully treated and fully recovered from the attack, while Artful Awakenings successfully replaced the implants. The woman as well as a lot of observers concluded that the implant helped in saving her life.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Frank P. Filiberto is the only doctor to receive the National Physician of the Year twice, in 1993 and again in 1995. The award is given by the US Olympic Boxing to boxing physicians for their exemplary service. The Jayvees, Florida also honored him with the Pioneer Award.

Family and Personal Life

Dr. Frank P. Filiberto enjoys coaching boxing and basketball games. He and his wife, Chris, take pride in their two college kids.
